BBA Job Description

The BBA is the leading UK banking and financial services trade association and acts on behalf of its members on domestic and international issues. Our 225 banking members are from 60 different countries and collectively provide the full range of banking and financial services. They operate some 130million accounts, contribute £50bn to the economy and together make up the worlds largest international banking centre.

The Director, EU Government Affairs is responsible for the BBA’s advocacy work in Europe and for EU issues affecting the UK. The Director will develop BBA policy, analyse the impact of EU policy on members and ensure relevant information on retail and wholesale financial services issues reaches targeted stakeholders in a timely and appropriate way.

The Director will be responsible for:

  • briefing senior colleagues and members on EU issues;
  • preparing written responses to consultation and other documents, drawing on the views of member organisations;
  • compiling analyses of the views of key organisations on current principal EU issues;
  • oversight of weekly member e-newsletter/ bulletin;
  • assisting preparation of newsletters and other briefing papers for various audiences;
  • updating members on a range of regulatory issues principally related to EU developments.

The role requires:

  • good analytical ability;
  • fluency in at least one other core European Union language other than English;
  • interest in politics/ current affairs and regulatory policy issues;
  • management experience;
  • ability to work on own initiative, under pressure and as part of a team; and
  • first class oral and written communication skills.

You will have a substantial proven track record of working in a policy-related/public affairs / political environment role (for example, in government/ the EU, City, accounting or legal profession or a similar body to the BBA) with a demonstrable ability to build and maintain contacts.

With a clear understanding of current affairs and relevant EU financial services public policy issues (retail in particular), you will have a strong knowledge and understanding of the political process and the institutions involved (particularly EU but how this relates to the UK is also important)

You will be expected to develop and maintain good working relationships with counterparts in government, member and other organisations, particularly in Brussels and the European Parliament.
