About Us

Established in 1974, the Federation of Small Businesses has grown to become the largest independent business support organisation in Europe. Representing over 213,000 members, it is the UK’s most significant campaigning group which promotes and protects the interests of the self-employed and owners of small businesses.

Every year, Government at every level produces policies which will directly or indirectly affect small businesses. Therefore, the FSB’s policy team has an important lobbying role to play in order to reduce the impact of legislation for its members; its work in representing small businesses’ views in Westminster, Whitehall and Brussels is increasingly regarded.

The Role:

  • Reporting jointly to the Deputy Head of Policy and to the Portfolio Chair, you will assume responsibility and be the main point of contact for Local Government policy work and one other policy area.
  • Ensuring that members’ interests are represented to UK Government and other relevant stakeholders, you will provide information and make recommendations to the relevant Policy Committee regarding key policy issues and campaigns.
  • To respond to political and legislative developments and identify their impact on small businesses, whilst producing policy briefings and articles for both internal and external publications.

The Candidate:

  • A graduate in a related subject such as Social Sciences, Politics or Law, you should possess a thorough knowledge of Westminster political processes and systems, together with a good awareness of key political figures in the UK Government and Parliament.
  • You must have previous policy or public affairs experience gained within a membership organisation, the UK civil service, local government or related body or perhaps within the central function of a main UK political party.
  • Experience of small business issues would be ideal.
  • Your strong analytical and report writing abilities will be complemented by your excellent communication and relationship building skills.

By helping to reduce the impact of legislation on our members, you can make a tangible difference to thousands of businesses, millions of employees and the wider UK economy. In promoting small businesses’ views in Westminster, Whitehall and Brussels, you will be well placed to raise your profile, develop your networks and build your expertise.
