The PubAffairs network numbers over 4,000 members and is free to join. PubAffairs operates a general e-Newsletter, as well as a number of other specific group e-Newsletters which are also available to join by completing our registration form.

SMMT Ltd is recruiting for a Policy Officer for a fixed term of 9 months/until 31 August 2015.

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly-motivated individual with previous public affairs or parliamentary experience to join a small and dynamic team in one of the UK’s most influential and respected trade associations.

The successful candidate will be part of SMMT’s Policy Team which is responsible for maximising the SMMT's influence in leading policy debates and delivering a comprehensive political engagement programme at UK and EU level.

The role will consist of key functions in supporting the delivery of SMMT’s UK and EU public affairs and policy work, such as:

  • Monitoring and tracking political issues relevant to the UK automotive industry;
  • Preparation and writing of lobbying materials, briefing papers, consultation responses and newsletters;
  • Assisting in the delivery of high-profile events, meetings and regular political engagements;
  • Liaising with key SMMT political contacts, member organisations, officials and stakeholders at all levels;
  • Supervising and administering SMMT’s political and stakeholder databases.

You should be a highly motivated team player, able to demonstrate strong analytical ability, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a keen interest in political issues.

SMMT seeks the following attributes from candidates:

  • Graduate level with previous experience in a public affairs or policy roles;
  • Strong analytical, presentation and written skills;
  • Experienced in compiling accurate and reliable briefings and reports as well as delivery of presentations;
  • Evidence of good time management, job prioritising skills and ability to meet deadlines;
  • Highly motivated team player, self-starter, eager to learn and contribute to policy development and relationship management in a small team context;
  • Knowledge (and ideally experience) of UK and/or European parliamentary and legislative processes.
