France & Italy to Exchange European Commissioner Portfolios

European Commission President Barroso has confirmed that should Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini be appointed to the newly elected Berlusconi Government that France and Italy will exchange portfolio's inside the Commission with Jacques Barrot retaining the high profile justice, freedom and security role. Any newly appointed Italian Commissioner will take over the Transport post.

Clinton Wins Pennsylvania to Keep Presidential Hopes Alive

Former First Lady, Hillary Clinton has kept her hopes of securing the Democratic Presidential Nomination alive by beating Barack Obama in the latest Primary in Pennsylvania. Illegal Migration on UK-Spanish Meeting Agenda

Europe Minister Jim Murphy today meets members of the newly formed Spanish Government in Madrid. Discussions will focus on working jointly to tackle global challenges facing EU citizens, together with managing migration from Africa. Murphy said "llegal migration and trafficking damages lives and harms societies' cohesion - both in Europe and in migrants' home countries. My colleague Liam Byrne MP has been working closely with his opposite numbers in Europe to ensure an effective and comprehensive approach to protecting Europe's borders and ensuring that individuals do not suffer from criminals engaged in exploitation and trafficking".

Work and Pensions Committee Report on Workplace Health and Safety

The House of Commons' Work and Pensions Committee Report on workplace health and safety has concluded that inspections on employers are too infrequent and that penalties for heath and safety offences in the workplace are too low. The Report covers the role of the Health and Safety Commission and the Health and Safety Executive in regulating health and safety in the workplace. Read the Report

Robinson & Dodds Confirmed as New DUP Leadership

Peter Robinson has been unanimously confirmed as the new Democratic Unionist Party by the party's 120-member executive. The move follows Ian Paisley's March decision to step down as the DUP leader and Northern Ireland's First Minister. Nigel Dodds will become the deputy leader.

Death of Gwyneth Dunwoody MP

Gwyneth Dunwoody MP has died at the age of 77. It is reported that Mrs Dunwoody had recently had emergency open-heart surgery and had been ill for the past week. The longest serving female Member of Parliament, she had been Labour Member for Crewe and Nantwich since 1974 and Chair of the Transport Select Committee since 1997. She was also MP for Exeter between 1966 and 1970 as well as having been an MEP between 1974 and 1979. Prime Minister Gordon Brown said she was "politics at its best", whilst David Cameron said "She was an extraordinary MP, a real battler. Someone who was never prepared to just take the establishment view".

Tory Complaint over Labour Breach of Electoral Rules

Eric Pickles, the Conservative Party's Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, has reported the Labour Party to the Cabinet Secretary, Sir Gus O’Donnell, over claims of a breach of electoral law. The complaint comes after Home Secretary Jacqui Smith announced an extra 300 police jobs to tackle terrorist threats. Pickles said the long-standing convention about announcements being made that are likely to influence electoral voting should not be made so close to upcoming 1 May local elections. Brown Summer Cabinet Reshuffle Speculation

The Daily Telegraph writes that a summer cabinet reshuffle could be on the cards as Prime Minister Brown faces further pressure on his premiership. Speculation includes potential promotions up the political ladder for Liam Byrne, Jim Murphy and Ed Miliband, whilst the losers could be Des Browne, Hilary Benn and Hazel Blears.

Berlusconi Back in Power

Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right coalition secured victory in the Italian General Election, defeating Walter Veltroni's centre-left Democratic Party. The media tycoon returns for a third term. It is the 62nd Italian Government in the 63 years since the end of the Second World War.
