Widdecombe Successor Selected
Maidstone & The Weald Conservatives have selected Helen Grant, owner of Grants Solicitors, as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate to succeed Ann Widdecombe who will stand down at the next General Election. Nine candidates were grilled at a constituency event on Sunday in a process that included an interview style question time with Private Eye editor Ian Hislop.

New Guidance on Preventing Election Fraud
Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Justice, Lord Hunt, has underlined Government commitment to the Police and Electoral Commission in detecting and preventing electoral misconduct and fraud. New guidance has been produced by the Electoral Commission and the Association of Chief Police Officers.

Home Secretary: Tackling Britain's Extreemism
Speaking at the First International Conference on Radicalisation and Political Violence at the International Centre for Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence, the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has outlined the Government strategy for tackling Britain's Muslim radicalism. Brown Creates New Public Risk Body
The Prime Minister has announced the setting up of a new body to enhance the way public risk is managed and understood. The Risk and Regulation Advisory Council will examine policy-making processes in order to improve regulatory decision-making. The Council wil look at areas such as obesity, food scares and regional regeneration failures.

Home Office Details 2008 Border Protection & Immigration Actions
The Home Office has announced changes to border protection and immigration, including the imminent implementation of a fingerprint check system for people applying for a visa from over 133 world countries. Immigration Minister Liam Byrne has set out a raft of target 'milestones' for 2008 including on-the-spot fines for employers failing to make the correct right-to-work checks and the introduction of a single border force.

Defra: Envionmentally Friendly Behaviour Change
Defra, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, has published a report on the potential for behaviour change amongst communities and members of the public geared towards encouraging environmentally friendly behaviour. The paper contains evidence about attitudes and public understanding, together with looking at willingness to act on 12 headline goals including: using water responsiibly; wasting less food; recycling more and managing energy usage.
