Tories attack Labour 'culture of spin'
The Conservative Party has criticised the Prime Minister for the increase in spending on Whitehall spin doctors. Commenting that the latest White Book of press and communications staff in Government Departments shows another year on year increase in numbers, the Conservatives noted that "since 1997, the cost of government PR, marketing and advertising has trebled, with £338 million of taxpayers' money being spent last year alone". Francis Maude, Shadow Cabinet Office Minister, said "The culture of spin is alive and well in Whitehall."

Romanian Euro Elections
Voting took place on Sunday in Romania's first European Parliament elections. With 35 MEP posts up for grabs, the official results will be announced on Wednesday and those elected will take take up their seats in 2008. It is already understood that voter turnout was poor.

Blair survives Met Police Authority confidence vote
With 15 members in support, seven against with one abstention, Britain’s most senior policeman Sir Ian Blair has won a vote of confidence by the Metropolitan Police Authority, the body which scrutinises and supports the work of the Met. Two weeks ago, London Assembly members passed a vote of no confidence in the Commissioner by a similar margin and called for his resignation.

HIPs rollout for all homes from mid-December
The Government has announced the rollout of Home Information Packs (HIPs) and Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) to the rest of the housing market from the 14 December. The Government has also published an independent report ‘HIPS – Housing Market Analysis’ carried out by Europe Economics about the impact HIPs have had on the market.

Tory Education Policy to Raise the Bar
The Conservatives have launched their own Green Paper on Education entitled 'Raising the bar, closing the gap'. Understood to be the first in a series of consultation documents, David Cameron's party promises 220,000 extra school places, plans to tackle educational under-achievement, more teaching by ability and giving teachers more power.

PM sets out Major Climate Change Challenges
Speaking on climate change at the WWF 'A One Planet Future' event in London, Gordon Brown announced a major expansion of energy from renewable sources together with the launch of a competition to build one of the world's first carbon capture and storage plants.

Leadership Poll Delivers Poor Brown Rating
A YouGov poll for the Sunday Times revealed that the Prime Minister's approval rating has hit an all time low with only 33% of the 2000 people questionned believing Brown is doing well in his leadership role. In comparison, 46% of respondants thought that David Cameron is doing a good job.
