Spending Review Tightens Britain's Belts
George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has presented the Government’s Spending Review, announcing average 19% cuts to spending budgets across Government departments up to 2014-15. Osborne's "day of rebuilding when we set out a four-year plan to put our public services and welfare state on a sustainable footing – for the long term" includes: 490,000 public sector jobs likely to go; £7bn of additional welfare budget cuts; police spending falling by 4% a year; retirement age to rise for men and women from 65 to 66 by 2020, phased in from 2018; whilst health spending will rise each year over and above inflation, and a rise to the schools budget. Legislation to secure a permanent bank levy is to be introduced “to extract the maximum sustainable tax revenues from financial services”.
