The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is a world-leading competition and consumer agency - our work makes a difference to millions of households and businesses across the UK. With markets constantly evolving and our remit expanding rapidly, we’re now taking on an even bigger role following our exit from the EU, including responsibility for state aid enforcement.

In response to this growth, we now have the opportunity for experienced stakeholder/policy experts to join our Devolved Nations group (one post available in each of Cardiff and Belfast), supporting the delivery of the CMA state aid function across Wales and Northern Ireland, including engagement with relevant aid-givers. The roles will work jointly across the CMA’s specialist state aid team who are leading on all state aid matters including casework and policy and guidance development.

As the first point of contact for all state aid enquiries in your nation, you must acquire at speed detailed knowledge of state aid regulation and become a trusted adviser for the CMA, providing timely advice to the state aid team on the economic, political and social context for delivery of the regime. This will involve regular liaison with the Welsh Government/Northern Ireland Departments and other significant funders on current and future policy developments, ensuring that all interested and relevant parties are able to participate and contribute to state aid development and delivery for the UK.

You will also lead on developing and implementing a strategic communications and engagement plan for outreach in your nation, relating to the CMA’s state aid procedures and responsibilities, ensuring that our role in state aid is understood by all key stakeholders across your respective nation. The role-holder will also assist in the delivery and assessment of state aid casework as well as wider work of the state aid group.

About you

Depending on the nation you are applying to work in, we are looking in your application for demonstrable knowledge of how the Welsh OR Northern Ireland government and legislative institutions operate, coupled with a good understanding of how devolution works. A highly effective communicator and stakeholder manager, you will also have demonstrable experience of successfully leading stakeholder engagement activities and/or strategic communications, taking account of wider contexts when summarising and presenting complex information to varying audiences, at all levels.
