Our fast-paced, award-winning advocacy team deals with the national media and prominent politicians on a wide range of issues on a daily basis. We’re looking for a diligent and hard-working Communications and Public Affairs Assistant with excellent communications skills and an enthusiasm for politics to contribute to our work.

In return you’ll get the chance to develop both public affairs and communications skills in a fascinating organisation, with lots of opportunity to stretch yourself and learn from experienced colleagues.

The ABI is one of the UK’s most modern and respected trade bodies. We represent the UK insurance and Long-Term Savings industry, a sector which employs around 300,000 people and contributes billions in taxes to the Government. Whether it’s saving into a pension or insuring your car, nearly everyone in the country buys our members’ products at some point, one of the reasons our work is so high-profile.

Representing this industry to policymakers, politicians and the media is no simple task. It takes a sharp brain, an ability to make complex subjects sound simple and buckets of hard work and determination.

Your role:

This role will give you the inside track on how we represent one of the UK’s biggest, most successful industries to Government, regulators, the media and the wider public.

On a daily basis, you’ll undertake political and media monitoring and report back to ABI staff. You’ll learn how to draft briefings for external audiences and work with the events team to organise political speakers. You will also work on the front line of the press team – fielding calls from the media, drafting press lines and dealing with enquiries – and will be part of the on-call media rota.

Where can this role take you?

Wherever possible, we support our staff to develop their careers internally. The next natural step for you in this role might be a Public Affairs Adviser or Communications Officer, but this is flexible.

With a supportive environment and the fantastic exposure you get to lots of people in the industry and the knowledge you’ll gain on a range of regulatory and policy issues, the ABI is a great place to build your career.

We’re looking for:

To be successful, you will be a strong, confident communicator who is politically aware and prepared to get stuck in and work hard. You’ll thrive on juggling multiple priorities and relish working at a fast pace. You’ll need to be highly organised and capable of collaborating with colleagues across the organisation.

You might not have worked in current affairs or politics before, but you’ll need a keen interest and broad general knowledge to get started in this role. This post is particularly suited to someone ambitious looking for a job to support them to work towards a more senior career in either communications or public affairs.

What training and benefits are offered?

On your first day you’ll be met by our HR team for a full company induction. You’ll then have inductions to get you up to speed with anything from Events to how our finances work, plus one to ones with relevant colleagues. Everyone goes on the CII Introduction to Insurance course and will receive plenty of on the job training. We host various Staff Learning Events throughout the year and you will be able to attend relevant ABI and industry events.

Additional training will be driven by your own personal needs and ambitions and we have a range of courses as part of our Learning and Development offering.
