Clayton Desant are currently representing a leading social justice charity who are currently recruiting for a Director of External Engagement.

As part of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), and reporting to the CEO, the Director of External Engagement will be responsible for developing and delivering a policy, public affairs and strategic communications strategy with a view to raising the profile of the organisation amongst a multitude of audiences.

The Director of External Engagement will lead the organisation’s Communications Brand & Design, Policy & Public Affairs (including media) and Corporate Projects functions with accountability for the departmental budget, income and expenditure, delivery and performance. 

You will:

  • Lead, develop and implement the organisation’s policy, research and public affairs strategy in line with the ELT and Business Directorate priorities;
  • Lead, develop and implement the marketing & communications strategy and plans to support the business strategy;
  • Lead, develop and grow the organisation’s policy programmes as funded by government and other bodies.

Required knowledge, skills and experience:

This a key strategic role for the organisation as they seek to further enhance their existing profile and influence through the development and delivery of a new external engagement strategy. As such, the organisation is seeking a candidate who can demonstrate an extensive background in policy development, public affairs and broader strategic communications leadership. Further, they are seeking the following:

  • Significant experience of working across a variety of communications fields (policy, public affairs, media, brand & marketing);
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and delivering an integrated communications strategy;
  • A substantial background in policy development and the knowledge and experience of using evidence based policy solutions to influence Westminster and Whitehall as well as delivering effective policy campaigns;
  • Experience of developing and delivering creative and highly effective communications strategies whilst leading and managing teams;
  • Knowledge and experience of working in the third sector on issues relating to social justice would be ideal.
