Engineering matters. It underpins our daily lives, drives economic growth, plays a critical role in addressing major societal challenges and helps ensure our readiness for the future, from providing a sustainable supply of food, water and clean energy, to advancing healthcare, and keeping us safe and secure.

The Royal Academy of Engineering is establishing an Engineering Policy Centre, working closely with partners across the engineering profession, to strengthen our collective ability to ensure that those challenges are informed and shaped by the best engineering expertise. The Centre is already changing how we identify, conduct and deliver policy projects, and how we use and present our deep policy expertise to increase impact and engage policy makers, industry and the public.

Reporting to the Policy Centre Senior Manager, you will act as the Academy’s Parliamentary and Public Affairs professional and work to shape and deliver our public affairs strategy and programme across the Academy.

In particular you will:

  • Support the policy activities of the Academy and wider Engineering Policy Centre, ensuring that the Centre’s outputs have appropriate influence;
  • Oversee the Academy’s wider public affairs activity. You will work with colleagues to develop a coherent overall programme of public affairs activity;
  • Maintain targeted links amongst Lords and MPs of all parties, and working with parliamentarians including in devolved nations to position engineering at the heart of society and extend the Academy’s & Centre’s influence and impact;
  • Support the Policy Centre Senior Manager on a range of other activities to build the influence and profile of the Academy’s and Policy Centre’s work.

An experienced external relations professional, you will bring a successful track record of public affairs work with demonstrable impact and will understand the public policy agenda and process. You will also be comfortable working in a scientific and technical environment.

With first class writing and editing skills, strong interpersonal and networking skills with the ability to work with people at all levels, an ability to inspire confidence through actions and attitude, you will be inspired by our mission and have the determination to elevate our impact.
