This is your opportunity to join one of Britain’s most interesting and exciting communications teams at a time of significant Government investment in the nation’s transport infrastructure.

We are undertaking the biggest modernisation programme for a generation, bringing our transport system into the 21st Century. We are already delivering better transport that works for everyone in Britain, and there is more to come. The Department for Transport cannot deliver this on its own. We need to work effectively with our partners, explain our plans and priorities, and listen, understand and respond to our stakeholders.

As Head of Communications Strategy & External Affairs, you will lead a team working on some of the most high profile projects in Government. You will be responsible for building and maintaining effective relationships across the department, implementing our communications strategy and campaigns, overseeing ministerial visits and planning, as well as advising Ministers and senior officials on stakeholder engagement. You will also play a key role in setting the direction of the Communications Directorate as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

To be equal to the challenge, you will need a strong track record in public affairs, stakeholder engagement and communications at a senior level. You will have strong influencing skills and a proven ability to advise and influence senior leaders in an organisation. You will be able to lead a diverse and talented team and be confident in managing competing demands.

In return, you will benefit from extensive training opportunities and scope to develop your career with the Government Communications Service. The successful candidate will have extensive contact with partner organisations, opportunities to strengthen ties with industry and work on jointly communications campaigns which have a national impact and profile.
