The PubAffairs network numbers over 4,000 members and is free to join. PubAffairs operates a general e-Newsletter, as well as a number of other specific group e-Newsletters which are also available to join by completing our registration form.

TheCityUK is the practitioner-led, independent, promotional, membership body for the UK-based financial and related professional services industry dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of the whole UK financial and professional services industry, its central role in national and global prosperity, and its links with overseas partners.

The organisation exists to further the business interests of its members through working with Governments, trade and sector groups, and other stakeholders to make the UK the most attractive place to set-up and grow a financial and related professional services business.

The focus of the role is to support the delivery of TheCityUK’s ‘competitiveness agenda’. This comprises: tax, regulation, talent and reputation of the sector. Through development of evidence-based policy expressed through compelling public affairs engagement we seek to improve the business environment for our members.

Vacancy Description

The role will be working with the Director of Policy & Public Affairs to develop and deliver the policy and public affairs work programme to achieve the delivery of the objectives set for TheCityUK. The job holder will manage the agreed strategy for engaging policymakers and public affairs stakeholders with TheCityUK’s policy agenda, will support the management of the Public Affairs Group and will work closely with colleagues within the Policy & Public Affairs (P&PA) team and the City of London Corporation (CoLC) to support the work of the International Regulatory Strategy group (IRSG) (and related Committees).

The role will be to:

  • Working with the Director to develop PPA strategy, including policy priorities, policymaker engagement and messaging;
  • Working with the Director, IRSG Chair and CoLC to develop IRSG strategy, policy priorities and content;
  • Working with the Director to develop and deliver an engagement programme with policymakers and public affairs stakeholders in the UK, EU, G8 and G20;
  • Managing the delivery of a programme of policymaker roundtables, seminars, conferences and other stakeholder events;
  • Managing the maintenance of the P&PA calendar of internal and external events and ensure the work plan is coordinated with external policy drivers;
  • Developing a strategy for managing relations with PPA stakeholders and maintaining knowledge management systems about external relations;
  • Managing day-to-day relationships with external agencies and consultancies supporting the P&PA programme;
  • Working with Chief Economist to develop research plan to support PPA objectives and to integrate the outputs of the Independent Economists’ Group in policymaker engagement strategy;
  • Working with IRSG Executive Board co-chairs and CoLC secretariat to deliver IRSG Executive Board programme and IRSG Council programme;
  • Responsibility for PPA interface with CoLC secretariat for IRSG Executive Board and IRSG Council.

External Engagement

  • Working with DP&PA to develop and deliver engagement strategies and meetings programme with stakeholders in the EU and UK nations and regions;
  • Working closely with International Team to deliver UK, EU and US policymaker engagement on cross-organisational objectives such as FSTIB and TTIP;
  • Working closely with Policy Manager in delivery of IRSG EEG meetings, IRSG work streams and activities related to European Banking Union;
  • Working closely with International and Research team colleagues.

Required Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Significant experience in managing a Public Affairs/Policy Team;
  • Understanding of and interest in financial markets and products, economics and public policy;
  • “Self-starting”/prioritising tasks/attention to detail/conscientious/takes responsibility and ownership;
  • Good influencing and communications skills;
  • Ability to network, develop relationships and work with senior individuals across a range of organisations;
  • Analytical and report writing skills of a high calibre;
  • Willingness to develop in-depth knowledge of policy matters;
  • Willingness to travel to meetings overseas.

Desirable:

  • Academic or career experience in financial services or economics;
  • Public policy experience;
  • Degree in Economics/Political Science.

This role is based in London but may involve travel elsewhere on occasion in the UK and Europe. TheCityUK office is a small and close knit team with a flexible approach to tasks and responsibilities. It is essential that the candidate appreciates and can work within these conditions.
