If you have impressive people and organisational skills, ideally gained within a data protection policy background combined with international policy experience, this unique challenge offers plenty of variety and the opportunity to help represent the UK’s information rights regulator on the global stage.

As an independent body serving the public, The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) upholds information rights for all. We do this by promoting openness in public bodies, as well as data privacy for individuals. As well as this, we oversee legislation that ensures people’s data is secure, accurate and robustly managed.

You will be a key member of a small team dedicated to ensuring the fulfilment of the ICO’s international responsibilities and commitments. The ICO’s International Team reports directly to the ICO’s Senior Management Team. This is a policy-focussed rather than a legal officer role. Prioritising competing tasks in a very varied workload, you will help to maximise the influence of the ICO on international approaches to data protection. This includes work with other European data protection authorities on matters related to the application of the EU Data Protection Directive (95/46/EC), working on the future shape of the UK’s data protection law as currently being finalised in Brussels, supporting the development of policy on international enforcement co-operation, working on international data protection matters in the law enforcement sector and comparing the ICO’s experience on many operational and policy aspects of our work with our counterparts abroad.

Degree educated or equivalent, you will have a good understanding of the European legal framework that underpins the UK information rights landscape and proven relevant experience. Naturally, you’ll have strong analytical and interpretive skills. In addition you’ll be a skilled and versatile communicator with the ability to influence stakeholders both internally and externally. Whilst based in our Wilmslow Head Office, you will be required to travel to meetings and events in the UK and overseas, and participate in telephone conferences (sometimes involving work outside office hours).
