Join the Network

Reporting to the Manager, General Insurance, the successful candidate will contribute to the development of ABI policy on motor and liability insurance issues by identifying key desired outcomes and working to achieve them with ABI colleagues, government, the UK insurance industry and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Specific policy work

As part of a wider team working on motor and liability insurance issues, the successful candidate will:

  • Develop policies to increase consumer, political and media understanding of motor insurance and the rating factors insurers use to underwrite their policies;
  • Lead the ABI’s policy work on road safety issues, including acting as the policy lead on the ABI’s Safe Young Driver campaign;
  • Work closely with colleagues in promoting the insurance industry as an informed voice on a range of issues including driverless cars, autonomous braking, e-Call, and telematics;
  • Work closely with Thatcham Research to investigate issues associated with vehicle research, salvage and repair, investigate the future challenges facing the motor insurance market and the opportunities and risks these present;
  • Act as the ABI relationship manager for Gibraltar-based motor insurers, including visits to Gibraltar;
  • Manage the ABI’s Motor Committee and the High Level Liaison Forum (HLLF) – a group for insurers and vehicle manufacturers to engage in a strategic dialogue on key issues, e.g. driverless cars;
  • Lead the Directorate’s engagement with Insurance Europe from both a motor and liability insurance perspective, including attending meetings of relevant Committees and Working Groups in Brussels;
  • Work with the ABI’s European Affairs team on the wide range of liability insurance related issues being considered at the European level, e.g., environmental liability and medical devices;
  • Act as an effective external representative of the ABI and the insurance industry by undertaking speaking engagements and media appearances;
  • Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required by ABI.

Internal

  • Policy Directorate;
  • Cross cutting ABI teams, especially in the Advocacy Directorate e.g. the Media, Parliamentary Affairs and European teams

External

  • ABI member insurance companies and the wider UK insurance industry, including the London Market Association (LMA) and British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA)
  • Relevant Government departments/agencies, including:
    • Department for Transport;
    • HM Treasury; and
    • Ministry of Justice;
  • Representatives of other bodies (e.g. CBI, Insurance Europe) and other organisations with an interest in the policy issues associated with motor and liability insurance;
  • MPs and relevant Parliamentary committees;
  • Thatcham Research;
  • Motor Insurer’s Bureau (MIB);
  • Parliamentary Advisory Council on Transport Safety (PACTS);
  • Employers Liability Tracing Office (ELTO);
  • Other stakeholders e.g. research providers.

The successful candidate will have proven experience in a policy type role and demonstrate the following attributes:

  • A track record of achieving results and pro-activity, including the ability to plan and work independently to achieve agreed objectives;
  • Experience of leading and analysing complex policy issues, identifying and managing policy risks and exercising sound judgment;
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills that are exercised in a way that is appropriate to the audience;
  • Good interpersonal skills, including leadership;
  • Ability to manage a number of complex work areas simultaneously;
  • Responsive to the views of others;
  • Strong team-working skills with the ability to work collaboratively and to contribute to the wider work of the ABI;
  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to changing work demands.

Additional information

The role is based at the ABI located in the City of London but some travel both within the UK and Europe will be required.
