Join the Network

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Policy and Public Affairs Team in our London or Swindon office. Reporting to and working closely with the Head of Policy and Public Affairs, the successful candidate will play a key role in enhancing Nationwide’s reputation with Parliament, Government, regulators and other stakeholders, both domestically and at European level, and engaging with key public policy issues for the Society.

Who we're looking for

You’ll need to:

  • Have significant practical experience of public affairs and have a proven track record of successfully influencing senior internal and external stakeholders;
  • Understand how to develop and deliver successful public affairs campaigns;
  • Be able to quickly recognise potential policy, regulatory and political risks and opportunities to Nationwide’s reputation and corporate goals. Devise and implement strategies that minimise/exploit emerging issues;
  • Be politically aware, with an excellent working knowledge of both the domestic and European public policy, regulatory and legislative processes – ideally with experience and understanding of financial services-related issues;
  • Have a strong external network;
  • Have a clear ability to work with and lead cross-functional teams to deliver results;
  • Be able to communicate effectively and confidently at executive level with excellent presentational skills, both written and verbal;
  • Be a highly analytical, strategic thinker who is creative and pragmatic;
  • Be resilient and prepared to work under pressure to extremely tight deadlines in order to achieve results of the highest standard.

What you'll be doing:

  • Developing robust policy positions on key issues and communicating these to external stakeholders in order to progress the Society’s goals;
  • Developing and implementing effective public affairs strategies and campaigns to deliver real value to the Society and its members;
  • Supporting and co-ordinating senior-level engagement with key external stakeholders from national and local government, the UK and EU Parliaments to regulatory authorities;
  • Acting as an effective business partner to senior internal stakeholders through the provision of expert policy and public affairs advice and monitoring;
  • Preparing high quality briefing papers, policy documents, responses to official consultations and commercial publications on all relevant issues;
  • Representing Nationwide externally;
  • Promoting understanding of and generating support for the work of the Policy and Public Affairs function within Nationwide.

The extras you’ll get:

If you put a lot in, it’s only fair you should get a lot out. So if you help us do the right thing for our customers, we’ll help further your career at Nationwide. As well as your salary, there’s life assurance, a pension and a recognition and rewards scheme. We think it’s a great place to work, and we’re not afraid of giving you praise when you’ve done well.

Why work for us:

At Nationwide we don’t have shareholders, we’re here for our members and we put their needs first in everything we do. And now, more than ever, two things are helping us go from strength to strength: we put our customers first, and we’re known for being open, honest and trustworthy.

We’re also the world’s largest building society, with communities at the heart of everything we do. We aim to do the right thing for our members which helps set us apart from our competitors. But we need good people to help us do it. People who understand what we believe in, and have the talent and drive to keep us successful.
