The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is one of the UK`s leading science facilities and research centres. It is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate standards, science and technology available.

NPL occupies a unique position as the UK`s National Measurement Institute and sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application. Its expertise and original research have underpinned quality of life, innovation and competitiveness for UK citizens and business for more than a century.

As NPL's Policy Communications Officer, you will report to the Senior Stakeholder Manager and have responsibility for helping to plan and deliver activity across the whole of NPL.

This role will have responsibility to:

  • Deliver robust, apolitical policy lines backed up by evidence and research to qualify and justify NPL`s position and recommendations, working alongside NPL economists;
  • Provide written submissions for government policy formulation including supporting drafting HMT Business Cases - mainly focusing upon the strategic case and alignment with policy;
  • Monitor, track and respond to appropriate policy consultations, select committee inquires and policy announcements;
  • Provide research analysis (and conduct research when necessary) to substantiate policy lines and input into NPL's strategic thinking.

NPL is based in a unique research environment, which is located in pleasant surroundings on the edge of Bushy Park in south-west London. We have a host of onsite facilities including a subsidised crche, restaurant, and a sports and social club.

NPL Management Limited is committed to supporting its people to develop both personally and professionally and is committed to equal opportunities.

We expect candidates to have a science background (probably at degree level or equivalent experience) and experience of working in and around Westminster and Whitehall.

As candidates will be based in a busy communications team but will have responsibility to deliver this role; we are looking for impeccable communications skills both written and oral, attention to detail, and to be self-motivated and organised. A good understanding of policy areas, the ability to learn quickly and knowledge of effective advocacy, are vital.
