Established in 1860, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home aims to never turn away a dog or cat in need of our help, caring for them until their owners or loving new homes can be found, no matter how long it takes. We are champions for, and supporters of, vulnerable dogs and cats, determined to create lasting changes for animals in our society. We currently operate from three centres – in Battersea London, Old Windsor in Berkshire and Brands Hatch in Kent. Every year, we care for over 7,000 dogs and cats.

Battersea is one of the best-known charities in the UK and our Communications Department leads on enhancing, growing and protecting the Battersea brand, raising the Home’s profile by devising and executing award-winning campaigns, engaging hard to reach communities to communicate responsible dog and cat ownership and dog control messages, and engaging with Governments to ensure Battersea is a leading voice in the animal welfare sector.

The Public Affairs function within the Communications Department is responsible for Battersea’s policy stances on a range of issues, influence in the external political and Governmental environment and engagement with politicians, other sector organisations and other stakeholders. It is responsible for the further development of the Home as an authoritative commentator on policy developments at national, local and devolved levels.

Main Purpose of the Role

To support Battersea’s key role in innovatively influencing the political landscape for the benefit of our animals.

Overall Objectives

  • To maintain Battersea’s leadership and influence within Government departments, Local Authorities and the companion animal welfare sector;
  • To proactively promote the Home’s views with politicians, stakeholders and officials and to ensure they are fully engaged with the Home and our issues;
  • Ensure that the Home is ‘front of mind’ for officials and politicians needing information on animal welfare issues through effective communications including social media;
  • To help ensure that the Home is taking the right policy stances on key issues, and finds supporters to help promote them.

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home offer our employees a wide range of benefits, for example:
