An exciting opportunity has arisen within our External Relations team for a Public Affairs Manager in our Edinburgh offices for a period of around six months to cover shared parental leave. We welcome applications for those looking to be considered for a secondment opportunity or a temporary contract.

The team:

As the professional body for over 12,000 Scottish solicitors, the Law Society of Scotland seeks to lead legal excellence. Not only do we regulate the solicitor profession in the public interest, we provide services and support to help that profession thrive. We also play a key role to influence public policy decision making and create a fair and just society.

Our external relations team covers communications, policy development, research and our international work. The communications section of our team has responsibility for public affairs and stakeholder management, member communications, media relations, public communications and internal communications.

The role:

Reporting to our Head of Communications, our Public Affairs Manager plays a crucial role in our organisation. As part of our external relations team, you will manage our public affairs and stakeholder engagement, provide strategic advice across the organisation and be responsible for a significant budget each year.

You will develop and deliver a stakeholder engagement plan that promotes understanding of and support for our role as a regulator and our other work in the public interest amongst key stakeholders including politicians.

Working across a range of subject areas, both regulatory and non-regulatory, you will help us to craft our messages and ensure we remain at the forefront of effective engagement.

The candidate:

You will be passionate about and have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Scottish political and public affairs environment. You will relish working in a fast-paced environment and have excellent organisational skills. You will be able to build strong relationships with political stakeholders and other influencers to ensure they understand and where possible act on our priorities. Of course, you will be a team player, able to work closely with communications and policy colleagues as well as others from across the business. Acting as a communications business partner for other teams within the organisation, you will be confident working across the full range of corporate communications disciplines.

What will I receive in return?

  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays (pro rata);
  • Flexi-time;
  • Training is available for the successful candidate.

As an organisation our values are respect, openness, progress, inclusion and integrity. We strive to embed these in all our interactions with colleagues, members, stakeholders and members of the public.
