Overview

The Senior Managing Counsel, Public Policy and Regulatory for the UK and Ireland is responsible for liaising with policymakers, regulators and law enforcement officials for the purpose of preventing or minimizing the impact of adverse legislation and regulations on the company’s profitability and growth potential. This newly combined position, which will be based in London, will report to the Group Head, Global Regulatory Counsel, based in New York and to the Lead Region Counsel for Europe, based in Belgium. This position is part of the Regulatory/Public Policy team from a functional perspective and the Europe legal team from a regional perspective.

Role

The Senior Managing Counsel will:

  • Develop and manage MasterCard’s public affairs, government relations and regulatory affairs work (strategy and implementation) in the UK and Ireland;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key influencers including government, regulators, community groups, coalitions and trade associations in the U.K. and Ireland;
  • Provide legal advice to senior management on complex regulatory matters arising in the U.K. and Ireland;
  • Participate in multi-dimensional projects across business units/regions, successfully navigating throughout the organization to partner effectively with individuals from other departments and deliver results;
  • Work in close collaboration with the broader EU Public Policy and EU Regulatory Affairs teams;
  • Manage outside counsel on various regulatory matters as well as MasterCard’s public affairs agency on public policy matters in the UK and Ireland.

All about You

  • Law Degree with significant experience in a regulatory position in a corporation, associations or government context and/or as a regulatory attorney in a law firm (preferably in the payments industry, banking or financial services sector);
  • Significant legislative experience, which should include significant policy experience in financial services issues combined with corporate and association lobbying experience involving financial services and payment card industry issues;
  • Proven success in navigating multi-national organizations and operating effectively within a diverse multicultural organization;
  • Must demonstrate a proactive, time sensitive, results driven approach in carrying out all duties, obligations, and responsibilities;
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is a requirement. Excellent written and oral communication skills a must, including strong and proven influencing skills.
