A well established membership body is looking for a Senior Policy Advisor with an interest in and knowledge of technology policy and government issues.

Job Description

  • To manage and support the Policy Group Scotland, the Group in Northern Ireland, the Health and Safety Policy Panel and the Biological Effects Policy Advisory Group;
  • To form and maintain expert groups of members and other professionals relevant to these topic areas;
  • To prepare submissions on matters of concern to them and its members for Government and other decision-making bodies, as part of public consultations or otherwise;
  • To produce and maintain Health and Safety briefing documents as required;
  • To prepare reports and briefings to members, Government and the media to inform influence and advise on significant issues of current importance;
  • To arrange parliamentary briefings and meetings in Westminster, Holyrood and Stormont;
  • To liaise with other departments relevant to the above topic areas;
  • To ensure the currency of the Departmental web pages relevant to the above items;
  • To undertake any other duties and projects at the request of the Manager Policy Department;
  • To comply with data protection legislation and act responsibly on matters of data disclosure both internally and to third parties;
  • To be familiar with the Health and Safety and Fire policies for the organisation and to attend mandatory updates where required.

The Successful Applicant

Essential Criteria:

  • Educated to degree level in Engineering or Social/Political Science, together with a broad engineering interest;
  • An interest in, and knowledge of technology policy and government issues;
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to assimilate complex information quickly and produce written papers to a high standard of presentation and argument;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish credibility with senior personnel from industry, academe and government;
  • Experience of policy formation and/or public affairs work including informing and influencing MPs, MLAs, MSPs, Ministers and Civil Servants;
  • Competence in MS Word, email and the Internet;
  • Ability to focus on detail;
  • Willingness to travel regularly to Scotland and Northern Ireland to attend meetings and events.

Desirable:

  • Understanding and experience of the devolved administrations;
  • Understanding of physics and the scientific method.
