Lead the way in making the United Kingdom a great place for living.

There has never been a more exciting time to join the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). Decisions made here affect the whole of the United Kingdom, and our future as we leave the European Union. Responsible for England’s environment, the countryside and rural economy, the Defra group’s diverse teams deal with a vast range of issues that profoundly impact on people’s lives. Our remit spans the food and farming sectors, enhancing the environment, better protecting the country from natural threats and hazards, and championing our countryside and rural life. We are also responsible for a number of critical operational responsibilities, from processing payments, to licensing and permitting, and managing our territorial waters. Defra is one of the lead departments responsible for delivering a successful exit from the European Union.

We are seeking innovative thinkers to play pivotal roles in delivering our vision of ‘creating a great place for living’. For you, this means the chance to influence the development of new approaches and policies on issues affecting millions of people. We have a range of opportunities for Senior Strategy Leaders and Advisors. At the forefront of shaping Defra’s future - and so, that of United Kingdom - these are opportunities to take ownership of complex challenges and innovative solutions. You could shape strategy, explore future scenarios or analyse the implications of policy choices. You will need to disrupt established thinking and champion innovation as you lead projects to embed new strategies or improve the way we deliver change.

We are looking for people with a strong policy, analysis, or strategy background; or a proven track record of operational delivery, particularly in change and improvement.  Your flair for structured, analytical thinking will equip you to devise fresh approaches to complex problems. This will be matched by your ability to ask challenging questions and provide clear answers to people at all levels. You will need to lead, collaborate and adapt, over what is sure to be a fast paced and fascinating time.
