How would you like to shape the future of the country?

At Defra, our vision is to create a great place for living for people in this country. Our long-term aims are ambitious and you would join us at a unique opportunity to shape our future. We want to ensure a cleaner, healthier environment which benefits people and the economy; a world-leading food and farming industry; a thriving rural economy; and a nation protected against natural threats and hazards.

As an SEO, you’ll get to grips with a range of different policies, using evidence and expertise from within and outside Government to help to guide decisions about how they are developed. Whether you’re part of a team who briefs Ministers and senior officials or works alongside key stakeholders, you’ll play a pivotal role in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Handling a full range of policy and corporate service areas, you’ll collect, interpret and present key information to make sound judgements, often dealing with diverse problems. Exercising effective project management skills and techniques to deliver outcomes, you’ll work towards clear priorities, goals and timescales, ensuring professional excellence on every project.

In addition to your strong analytical and technical abilities, you’ll also need to demonstrate a high degree of interpersonal and managerial skill. A confident and inspiring communicator, you’ll cultivate your own networks, develop teams and delegate tasks. Honest, engaging and adaptable, you’ll be a true team player. You’ll establish a clear direction with staff, supporting them through change and bringing the best out of them to deliver better results.

In return, you’ll benefit from our commitment to nurturing your talent. You’ll also enjoy generous holidays, a civil service pension, childcare vouchers, bicycle loan schemes, work/life balance and more.
