MoneySavingExpert.com is the UK’s biggest consumer website. It provides millions of users with free, independent, editorially-led information about all things money. The goal for everyone working at MSE is simple: we’re dedicated to cutting consumer bills and working for financial justice for everyone.

If you’re inspired by what we do, see yourself as a passionate consumer champion, and have the public affairs expertise and personal finance knowledge required to do the job, then read on.

About the Campaigns team

The Campaigns team is focused on delivering better outcomes for consumers and stronger consumer protection through its work that takes in public affairs, research, policy, stakeholder engagement and PR.

The role

The Public Affairs Officer will focus on the MSE Campaigns team’s work with Parliamentarians, Government, regulators and other external stakeholders. You will take responsibility for developing and maintaining some crucial relationships with these individuals or organisations.
You will have a strong knowledge of how Parliamentary procedures really work.

You’ll be able to use this knowledge to report back on exactly what’s happening in Parliament in terms of legislation, meetings and other relevant activities. You will be comfortable advising on public affairs strategy, writing communications to stakeholders, briefing stakeholders in person or on the phone, and undertaking administrative tasks such as running tracking spreadsheets.

Key delivery objectives

Use Parliamentary levers and influence legislative processes to effectively campaign for MSE

From the outset and on an ongoing basis, advise the Campaigns Lead on strategy and tactics in Parliament in order to further MSE campaigns. Be willing and able to take on administrative, monitoring, and other tasks required to implement the strategy.

Deliver briefings

Prepare accurate, detailed briefings for senior members of the team, often within tight deadlines. Briefings will be required on various areas of personal finance. Use good knowledge of MSE and other contextual information, as well as excellent judgement, to determine what information to include or exclude. Briefings may be required to be presented orally or in writing.

Create a planning system (horizon planning) within MSE Campaigns

This will monitor all relevant key stakeholder events and publications, and Parliamentary business. Use these key dates to seize opportunities to further develop existing MSE campaigns.

Effectively manage relationships with key external stakeholders

Build, develop and maintain relationships with all relevant external stakeholders, referring upwards when appropriate.

Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will:

  • have demonstrable public affairs expertise;
  • have knowledge of the personal finance landscape;
  • be motivated to deliver the core purpose of the team: to fight the consumer’s corner. In order to do this effectively, it is important to be willing to be publicly politically neutral.
