The Institute of Directors (IOD).

Job Description

  • Engaging with the board/director community and other key stakeholders in order to identify key concerns and challenges across the defined policy areas;
  • Developing expertise and policy insights in the defined policy areas aimed at creating a positive environment for boards/directors, IoD members and the wider business community;
  • Research, draft and publish reports and articles, give presentations and provide relevant input to the Lead Media and Communications aimed at maximising the influence and public profile of the IoD;
  • Deliver effective consultation submissions which reflect the broad views of IoD members and take account of the economic, fiscal and political context;
  • Provide support to the Director General, Director of Policy and other senior IoD stakeholders, e.g. through briefings or advice, helping them to better communicate the IoD's policy priorities;
  • Taking responsibility for the organisation of policy publications, events and other related activities;
  • Representing the IoD to external audiences, including policy makers, the media and the IoD membership.

The Successful Applicant

  • Ability to see how different areas of public policy interact;
  • Good understanding of the UK's political, media and policy landscape;
  • The role will require presenting to members, the media and external audiences - therefore good presentational skills are important;
  • Ability to explain complex policy issues to non-expert audiences;
  • Flexibility in engaging with multiple policy areas, and rapidly identifying the key policy issues from a board/director perspective;
  • Ability to rapidly develop expertise in defined policy areas;
  • Excellent writing skills - including the drafting of articles and reports;
  • Understanding of the impact of government policies on boards/directors in the real world;
  • Excellent oral and written communicator;
  • Understanding/experience in any of the following policy areas: sustainabililty, future working, vocationsal skills, employment (desirable).
