Our department works on some of the most important and exciting policies in government. We are proud of our achievements and want to offer you the opportunity to get involved in our ambitious agenda to improve outcomes for millions of citizens in the UK; throughout their lives, in the work place, and in retirement.

Policy Group comprises some 1,400 people with a broad range of responsibilities. As the UK’s biggest public service department, we administer the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and ill health benefits to millions of people. At the same time, we are engaged in delivering a once in a generation programme of welfare reform.

We are committed to creating a welcoming inclusive workplace where everyone can be themselves and perform at their best; so we are looking for people from all walks of life to join our profession so that we have a truly diverse workforce with differing backgrounds, cultures and experience that reflect the customers we serve. This will enable us to create effective, inclusive policies together, that transform our vital services and support people across the country. We value diversity and welcome applications from all backgrounds and underrepresented groups.

We have a variety of policy and strategy roles available for skilled, adaptable people who are inspiring leaders. We are looking for people with all sorts of real-life experience, who have worked in all kinds of jobs and have a real passion and ability to make a difference.

When Covid-19 struck, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) immediately took a critical role in ensuring people received vital financial support, and that work will continue for as long as they need us. We are now a key player in working with other departments and external organisations to tackle the challenges of economic recovery.

Our vision is to ensure DWP represents modern Britain and is a truly inclusive employer. We want to maximise the potential of everyone who chooses to work with us – regardless of background. We are creating an organisation where diversity is not only respected and valued – but celebrated.

So if you are looking for an exciting and challenging role in policy making, we hope you will apply.

Regardless of where people work in Policy Group, common to all our SEO roles are:

  • Owning a policy area with empowerment over how you plan and organise your area of work;
  • Working across organisational boundaries, and with key partners, to deliver outcomes;
  • Problem solving to achieve outcomes for the government and citizens. Supporting a Team Leader by contributing to policy development as well as the management of the wider Division and strategic management of Policy Group;
  • Advising on decisions affecting the direction and delivery of the work area, assessing risk and advising on mitigation, including assessing the consequences of proposed changes, both internally and externally.

You will need to demonstrate how your experience and skills in these areas makes you suitable for the SEO roles. We will assess demonstration of your ability and experience of these elements within your application form. Only the candidates with the strongest evidence will be invited to interview.
