This day is designed to help people understand what economics is and how its insights influence the work of central and local government. It is aimed at those new to economics but who would benefit from a clearer understanding of how it can help in developing policies. The course will be useful for civil servants and staff from local authorities who want to know how economics can help their work, as well as provide valuable background knowledge for those from the wider public sector. People from the private and voluntary sectors who are involved in influencing government policy will also find this useful. The course is designed to be accessible and interactive.

Attendees to this course will:

  • Be introduced to economic insights about how wealth is created
  • Gain insights into how markets work, and the concepts of ‘market failure’ and ‘government failure’
  • Understand what cost/benefit analysis and impact assessment are and their importance in policy decisions
  • Better appreciate the potential for unintended consequences in policy decisions and how to avoid adverse effects
  • Examine newer developments in the field such as behavioural economics
