Fabian Women's Network and a new cross-party initiative, No One Ever Told Me About Politics, are hosting a joint event for Parliament Week 2013 on Tuesday 19th November. The theme this year is "Women in Democracy", which we are rather excited about!
Our event is designed for women who feel disconnected from politics and want to know more about why it matters and how they can get involved.
We hope to break the main barriers to political engagement by creating an open, informal spacewhere women can discuss and work through these topics together, with the help of a few lovely experts. This means: NO political jargon, NO political rhetoric, and LOTS of chatting and questions.
The broad topics we will be focusing on are:
- WHAT?: How politics works in Britain? What about the EU? Policy issues affecting women and the different political party stances on these.
- HOW?: The many different ways of getting involved in politics.
- WHY?: Where politics and participation has made a difference and why it matters.
Our guests will be free to pick and move around groups as they please, and there will also be the opportunity to post questions into the anonymous ballot box, discuss personal opinions and experiences of politics, and (of course!) to have a drink with some like-minded women. Our aim is for everyone to come away feeling informed and having enjoyed the evening.
Our confirmed speakers for the evening:
- Rebecca Veazey, Policy Officer at the British Heart Foundation and former Head of Policy at Women’s Resource Centre
- Sofia Patel, Researcher for Seema Malhotra MP
- Shona Elliot, Public Affairs Manager at London Borough of Newham
- Dr Monica Threlfall, Reader in European Politics at London Metropolitan University
- Ivana Bartoletti, Fabian Women’s Network Executive
- Sarah Hutchinson, Fabian Women’s Network
- Katie Ghose, CEO of Electoral Reform Society
