François Fillon is now the official candidate of the right and center, after winning the primary election on November 27th. Mr Fillon is the favourite for the presidential election now, but nothing is inevitable… After Brexit and Donald Trump winning the US presidency, will France’s presidential election be the next disruption of the political system?

François Fillon, 62, who campaigned as a sober French Thatcher, is now the official candidate of the right and center, after winning the primary election on November 27th. Often thought to merely be a challenger to the former President Nicolas Sarkozy and the front-runner Alain Juppé, he beat the latter in the second round, tallying more than 66% of the votes. After a very conservative campaign during the primary, Mr Fillon will need to rally around him centrists voters, in order to win in May 2017. Mr Fillon is the favourite for the presidential election now, but nothing is inevitable… After Brexit and Donald Trump winning the US presidency, will France’s presidential election be the next disruption of the political system?
