François Fillon, 62, who campaigned as a sober French Thatcher, is now the official candidate of the right and center, after winning the primary election on November 27th. Often thought to merely be a challenger to the former President Nicolas Sarkozy and the front-runner Alain Juppé, he beat the latter in the second round, tallying more than 66% of the votes. After a very conservative campaign during the primary, Mr Fillon will need to rally around him centrists voters, in order to win in May 2017.
