The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. We want to see a world where trees and woods thrive for people and nature. The Trust engages and inspires people to make their difference tackling the nature and climate crisis helping protect, restore and create our vital woods and trees.
THE ROLE
Sitting within our external affairs team, this role takes forward our policy influencing agenda both in the region and, when called upon, at a national level. The role works closely with the Northern England regional team. Your activities will act as a catalyst to landscape-scale partnership outcomes and projects that deliver for nature and climate on the ground.
Your work will deliver on our organisational goals of creating, protecting and restoring a North of England rich in native woods and trees during a particularly exciting time as we continue to implement the Northern Forest programme with our partners. The role will give you autonomy to influence and make an impact in a changing political landscape as devolution continues to create positive changes across the region.
You will have the opportunity to build on our reputation as a pioneer in regional environmental advocacy promoting not just our core goals but the wider benefits and impact of our work across Social Justice, Clean Air, Climate Change, Mental Health, Tree Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and Access to Nature as well as our corporate and advocacy partnerships. But this is not an exhaustive list.
This position is an excellent development opportunity, opening future career paths within the Trust and also the wider environmental and charitable sectors.
This is a Hybrid working role, where you’ll work part of your time at home and part of the time from our Head Office based in Grantham, Lincolnshire. Our Hybrid Working Policy is flexible, and the frequency of time spent in your contracted office will vary across teams and job roles. For this role we would only expect you to attend Head Office four times a year except under exceptional circumstances. All other travel and accommodation costs relating to performance of the role can be expensed. But you are always welcome to attend any of our offices should you wish.
THE CANDIDATE
You will be a passionate advocate for conservation in the North with a desire to explore opportunities that help create, protect and restore woodlands in the region. You will be motivated by growing and building exciting partnerships with stakeholders across the region to achieve your goals. Engaging with individuals and organisations in impactful ways and making every interaction count for our cause will be “what you do”.
Whilst these partnerships are important, you will also enjoy the autonomy of using your environmental and political knowledge to focus our policy influencing activity across the North individually as a front-line representative of the Trust’s goals and long-term strategy.
You will be ambitious and keen to grow your career with us and you will have scope to leverage and promote the Trust’s activities and the wider benefits of what we do in new and creative ways to achieve the maximum impact.
WHAT TO EXPECT BY JOINING A TEAM AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE
There’s no other organisation like the Woodland Trust. Joining the team you will be making your contribution to tackling the nature and climate crisis. In return, we recognise and value our people. You'll have our full support, training and opportunities for professional development, along with a contributory pension, life assurance, good holiday allowance and the opportunity to work flexibly from home.
OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
At the Woodland Trust, we believe everyone deserves to have their lives enriched by trees and woods.

As groups of people currently underrepresented as Woodland Trust employees, we are particularly keen to receive your application if you are Black, Asian or minority ethnic, disabled or under 25. We are measuring our success in redressing this.
