About the role

The Canal & River Trust is going through a period of significant change, as we reach out across towns, cities and villages to introduce new users to our waterways, and help them discover the wellbeing benefits offered by life by the water. You will play a crucial part in this change, by repositioning the Trust as a charity for wellbeing as well as for waterways, and by positively influencing the development of publicly policy, legislation, guidance and regulation in England and Wales.

As well as driving policy and public affairs strategy for the Trust, you will orchestrate a programme of national and devolved activities, and will build strategic relationships with key politicians, civil servants and advisers. You will also be responsible for managing and leading a team of policy specialists.

About you

This role calls for an established policy and public affairs professional who understands policy making and the political system, and who can demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of policy issues in the UK and Wales. In the course of your career, you will have gained exposure to many different areas of policy and public affairs, including strategy development, campaigning and political advocacy, and you will have a track record of influencing national debate and shaping the development of public policy. It is also essential that you are a strategic and analytical thinker, with excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills, and a proven ability to lead, manage and develop a team.

About us

One of the UK’s biggest charities, we maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs, along with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings – preserving them for future generations. We believe living waterways transform places and enrich lives. Achieving this vision will be a fascinating challenge. Come and be part of it.
