Joining the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) means making a real difference to the world. Now uniting development and diplomacy in one department, the FCDO pursues the UK’s national interests overseas. We are at the heart of an unrivalled global network of economic, diplomatic and security partnerships.

Our Multilateral Research Group (MRG) provides policy-focused research, analysis and advice on international institutions  ̶  primarily the United Nations, but also the Commonwealth, Council of Europe, and Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe   ̶ and on themes including human rights and conflict.

As a Senior Research Analyst you will be a subject-matter expert within the FCDO, providing timely and evidence-based analysis and acting as a bridge between policy-makers and experts outside of government. Building on the close and supportive relationship MRG already has with policy officers, you will provide advice, expert opinion and detailed research to meet specific needs. You can also expect to engage with external experts on behalf of the FCDO, including those in academia and think-tanks. The role may include representing the UK in multilateral bodies and negotiations, and there are significant opportunities for travel.

We’re looking for deep subject-matter expertise, which could have been gained through postgraduate study in international relations, human rights, war studies or strategic studies. Alternatively you may have significant professional experience in a relevant policy-making, analytical, or advisory capacity, perhaps working in an international organisation, government department or research institution. You will demonstrate advanced research skills and analytical rigour. The ability to communicate highly effectively in a variety of contexts, from off-the-cuff oral interventions through to in-depth research papers, is essential. You will also be practised in developing and maintaining productive relationships with stakeholders and collaborating with other researchers. You must be a British Citizen at the time of application and this role requires you to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance.

Learning and development is integral to the role. Given the breadth of MRG’s portfolio, you will have a constant stream of opportunities to further deepen and broaden your knowledge. This includes sustained coaching from your Line Manager and other MRG colleagues in a friendly, collegiate team.

You can also look forward to a package that includes a high-quality pension scheme, a minimum of 25 days’ holiday, flexible working and excellent, long-term career development.

Total Package: £39,499 to £48,000 depending on location + £4,000 specialist allowance.
