Reporting to the Director of Regulation, this is an integral role that forms part of the ABI’s leadership team and will be responsible for leading and managing the Prudential Regulation team. As our Assistant Director, you will lead in the development and promotion of ABI policy and technical proposals on Solvency II and wide regulation issues that affect the UK insurance industry, both in the UK and overseas.

  • Be the voice of the UK insurance industry, leading debate and speaking up for insurers;
  • Represent the UK insurance industry to government, regulators and policy makers in the UK, EU and internationally, driving effective public policy and regulation;
  • Advocate high standards of customer service within the industry and provide useful information to the public about insurance;
  • Promote the benefits of insurance to the government, regulators, policy makers and the public.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

  • Lead the ABI’s operational relationship with the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA);
  • Advance the ABI’s reputation among member companies as a source of indispensable expertise on Prudential Regulation;
  • Lead policy development on Solvency II, including contributions to committee meetings at Insurance Europe on EU level developments, building up a relationship with EIOPA on the Solvency II framework, and dealing with the PRA on UK implementation of Solvency II;
  • Oversight of negotiations both on accounting standards and audit, and through the IAIS on prudential regulation, including systemic risk in insurance and International Capital Standards;
  • Oversight of the ABI’s work on investment and capital markets issues and the management of ABI committees and working groups;
  • Contributing to the leadership of the wider ABI as part of the ABI’s Leadership Team.

About you:

In order to be considered for this opportunity, you will need to have, or have demonstrated the ability to quickly acquire:

  • An understanding of Solvency II and other prominent Prudential Regulation issues;
  • Excellent quantitative and analytical capability to determine accurate impact of any issues;
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate arguments supported by convincing evidence;
  • Ability to lead, manage, develop and retain a highly motivated and performing team to plan, prioritise and deliver work across a broad range of issues and projects;
  • Excellent lobbying skills, including the ability to win the confidence of senior people in member organisations, Government, regulators and elsewhere, and to argue persuasively for the industry’s interest.
