Take your research analysis expertise further, in a fascinating and personally rewarding career at the centre of world events.
About the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)
We are the UK Government department responsible for protecting national interests and promoting the UK’s role in the world. Operating in the UK and in 178 countries and territories, we work to promote the interests of British citizens, safeguard the UK's security, defend our values, reduce poverty and tackle global challenges with our international partners.
About the Senior Research Analyst roles
This is a great opportunity to help shape policy on the UK’s future relationships in Europe at a critical time following our departure from the EU.
We’re looking for two Senior Research Analysts specialising in the European Union. Initially, one role will focus on the EU’s institutions while the other will focus on the EU’s external relations. The scope of each role is likely to evolve over time to reflect changing business needs.
As part of a team of subject matter experts working to inform, challenge and improve FCDO and government decision-making, you’ll work with colleagues in the Europe Research Group, Europe Directorate, European diplomatic posts and across government.
You’ll also be responsible for providing and commissioning expert training on European affairs across the FCDO and Her Majesty’s Government (HMG). Developing relationships with academics and think tanks, you’ll tap into some of the collective expertise and research power of the best and brightest minds working outside HMG. There may also be the opportunity to travel in the region for research and outreach purposes.
Who we’re looking for
We recognise that great minds don’t all think alike and that diverse perspectives are essential to the role we play in improving FCDO’s decision-making. So, we welcome applications from all parts of the community regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or background.
We’ve embraced hybrid working and welcome applications from candidates with flexible working needs and candidates who are disabled, neuro-divergent, or have a chronic illness or mental or physical health condition.
You’ll need:
- Expertise on European and EU affairs;
- A post-graduate degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline such as European Studies, plus some relevant experience in policy and/or research;
- Proven research and analytical skills, with the ability to think strategically;
- Ability to grow a network inside and outside HM Government, in the UK and abroad.
You must be a British Citizen at the time of application and, if invited to interview, you’ll need to bring your British Passport with you. This role requires you to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance.
What we offer in return
We offer learning and development opportunities tailored to your role – like the opportunity to learn or further develop relevant European languages through the FCDO language provider.
We encourage and support all staff to realise their potential and achieve a healthy work-life balance. As well as flexible working and generous annual leave, other benefits include a Civil Service pension, childcare support and our employee assistance programme.
Permanent - Full or part-time/job share, with opportunities for flexible working.
