This day is designed to help people understand how impact assessment and cost-benefit analysis can be used most effectively in order to improve decisions, policies, projects and delivery. The course addresses the core principles of impact assessment and cost-benefit analysis and how these principles can be applied in practice to different types of decision. These core principles apply to all types of impact assessment (e.g. regulatory impact assessment, equality impact assessment etc.) and across government, voluntary and business sectors.

The course will be useful for those in the public, private and voluntary sectors who want to improve their own impact assessments and policy decisions or who want to engage more effectively with government consultation. The event will be very interactive and enable participants to address the impact assessment and cost-benefit analysis questions likely to arise in their work.

Attendees on this course will:

  • Learn how to ensure that impact assessment genuinely improves policy rather than just being a bureaucratic exercise
  • Understand the essentials of cost-benefit analysis and its role in improving all kinds of decisions including policy appraisal
  • Gain strategies for engaging stakeholders effectively in impact assessment and cost-benefits analysis
  • Understand how to evaluate policy and project options
  • Appreciate the importance of post-implementation monitoring, review, and evaluation
