Join the Network

The NFU is looking for a Director of EU Exit and International Trade within its department of Trade and International Policy. The job holder will report to the Director of Policy.

Reporting to job holder: 

  • Economics Affairs Adviser;
  • Trade Policy Adviser;
  • Assistant Adviser.

Main purpose and scope of job:

  • To lead, develop and deliver the NFU’s strategy resulting from the UK’s decision to leave the European Union;
  • To be a strong and effective advocate of NFU policies with senior stakeholders, particularly in Whitehall;
  • To build and sustain effective communication with Officeholders, members and staff across the NFU;
  • To develop and promote effective relationship management of NFU’s key stakeholders;
  • To influence and guide NFU staff through inspirational, practical and relevant leadership and management.

Levels of authority: 

  • Lead the EU Exit & International Trade Unit;
  • Accountability for EU Exit and International Trade Unit budget and resource allocation;
  • Recruit, manage and lead direct reports;
  • Advise national officeholders and the NFU boards on the development of NFU Trade and International policy.

Functional and Managerial responsibilities:

Strategy and Organisation

  • Direct and manage projects and activities following from the NFU’s ‘Brexit’ strategy;
  • Contribute to the NFU’s corporate and strategic objectives, plans and policies;
  • Provide advice to Directors and National and Regional Officeholders on all matters relating to international policy and trade issues;
  • Ensure that the NFU policies, activities and successes are promoted within the NFU;
  • Hold ultimate responsibility for the administration and expenditure of the allocated budget for the EU Exit & International Trade Unit;
  • Provide regular reports to the NFU Boards and Officeholders;
  • Support the implementation of the organisation’s values and culture;
  • Design and carry through programmes of change to adapt to emergent pressures and demands.

Operational

  • Promote effective joint working across the NFU’s Directorates to achieve agreed policy aims;
  • Ensure the effective management and motivation of staff in the EU Exit and International Trade Unit;
  • Ensure that NFU policies are pursued at all staff levels in all the work carried out by the EU Exit and International Trade Unit;
  • Responsibility for the performance management, disciplinary and grievance procedures, as appropriate for all Department staff.

General

  • Ensure continual improvement in the Unit’s effectiveness, it’s communication with other parts of the Policy Directorate and wider NFU;
  • Ensure that staffing levels are adequate and that training is provided, when appropriate;
  • Able to undertake some international travel as well as attend meetings and presentation in the NFU’s Regional, Welsh, London or Brussels offices, as required.

This job description will develop to meet the needs of the NFU and any additional duties will be commensurate with the post holder’s grade.
