Our client is a leading financial services membership body representing members in the UK and globally.

This role is part of the External Affairs leadership team, responsible for the anticipation and recognition of external developments in the business and regulatory environment which the organisation represents, and for the development and delivery of high quality, professional and innovative outputs on key issues positioning them as a global leader.

As part of the External Affairs Leadership Team, the role holder will ensure that plans are developed and coordinated in line with the organisations strategy and market priorities, and for the delivery of member value to time and within budget. The postholder will be responsible for the management of resources within the Directorate to develop and deliver an annual and three year rolling plan.

Key to success in this position is an outcome-focused approach to creating enhanced value for members and buy-in for continuous improvement across the External Affairs team. It is anticipated that the majority of this role will be concerned with the planning and management of resources to deliver External Affair’s contribution to organisations Strategy 2020. The rest will be concerned with the direct communication and presentation of the External Affairs agenda to internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • As part of the External Affairs Leadership Team, to work collaboratively to develop, direct, manage and deliver the rolling three year and annual plan for External Affairs, in support of strategic priorities and corporate plan (approximately 70% of the role);
  • As subject matter manager, lead major subject- specific projects, initiatives, external representation and campaigns and contribute to the generation of high-quality, professional and innovative output across the portfolio (approximately 30% of role);
  • To lead direct and manage a Development team working across the portfolios within the Directorate, to support the delivery of high-quality, professional and innovative output for communication in a range of formats to key audiences;
  • To lead the deployment and management of financial and people resources to deliver the annual plan on time and within budget, working closely with Heads, HR and Finance;
  • To ensure that resourcing plans are sufficiently flexible to accommodate changes to the External Affairs agenda or priorities, arising from internal or external developments;
  • To lead, at least quarterly and ad hoc as required, a re-appraisal of the External Affairs three year plan to ensure that major developments are anticipated where possible, that the forward programme of outputs is transparent and visible across the organisation, and that resources are in place to support planned projects and initiatives as required;
  • To ensure the development and effectiveness of service level agreements with departments across the organisation to ensure delivery of External Affairs output to customers and stakeholders in line with plans and priorities;
  • Support teams and specifically the Heads of Policy to deliver credible messages aligned with strategy and market plans and priorities;
  • Direct and manage the Public Affairs team in line with plans and priorities;
  • Manage the performance of employees against plans and objectives through the execution of the performance management processes;
  • Provide opportunities for growth and development, championing the talent process within or beyond the portfolio, ensuring the retention of appropriate skills within the organisation;
  • Demonstrate ownership of the External Affairs plan;
  • Represent the organisation externally as required;
  • Ensure dynamic and effective management, leverage and coordination of Global Forum activity;
  • Ensure that the organisations network of influential contacts is managed and grown to deliver strategic objectives in leading the industry globally;
  • Ensure that people in the Development Team and across External Affairs are compliant with all strategy, policy, procedures and guidelines for which their compliance is required.
