SHAPE THE WAY THE NATION SEES THE POLICE
At the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), we play a vital role in helping police to cut crime and keep the public safe. Our job is to coordinate the operational response across the service to the UK’s most serious threats, including crime, terrorism and national emergencies. To do so, we bring together 43 operationally independent and locally accountable chief constables and their forces to join up a national approach and improve policing for the public.
Right now, we’re looking for a talented Public Affairs Officer to join our team, and develop and deliver the NPCC’s public affairs strategy. In this role, you will be part of a small team providing strategic communications advice and support to the NPCC, and chief officers around the country. And you’ll be working on some of the biggest national policing issues.
It’s an exciting time to join policing at a national level. Crime is changing, so policing is changing too. Chief Officers are seeking to find the best way to police their communities, while working collectively to deliver further reform. The NPCC is at the heart of this. We’re committed to having honest conversations with internal audiences, stakeholders and the public about policing and being open and transparent about our work. That’s exactly what you’ll help us achieve.
With a passion for politics and sound knowledge of parliament, you will develop and deliver public affairs and communications strategies to communicate the NPCC’s work and priorities to a range of stakeholders. You will monitor policing and parliamentary business, sharing timely updates with chief officers and police forces, as well as providing advice and support in relation to parliamentary select committees, debates, questions and legislation. You also contribute to our annual conference, which brings together leaders from across policing and politics. Specifically, you’ll be responsible for developing an exciting and topical agenda, and engaging the media and public in the debates.
As you’d expect, we’re looking for someone with experience of developing effective communications and public affairs strategies to deliver corporate priorities and strategies. You’ll bring up to date knowledge of a broad range of communications and engagement practices, tools and techniques. And it’s likely that you’re already working in communications, politics or public affairs.
Crucially, you’ll thrive in a fast-paced environment and you’ll understand the issues around working in a confidential and politically sensitive environment. Thanks to your excellent communication skills, you’ll impress with your ability to create impact and establish credibility – and you’ll influence key stakeholders at all levels. You’ll also be comfortable with participating in a 24/7 on call service for urgent issues out of normal working hours.
