Are you an analytical, collaborative and engaging individual with a passion for innovation and social change? Looking for an exciting new career opportunity? If so, Nesta is looking for a Senior Policy Advisor to join our Inclusive Innovation team and develop a distinctive policy agenda on inclusive innovation and the future of work.

About Nesta and the programme

Nesta is a global innovation foundation. We back new ideas to tackle the big challenges of our time.  Our mission is to spark and shape new ideas that improve how the world works for everyone. We use our knowledge, networks, funding and skills - working in partnership with others, including governments, businesses and charities. We are a UK charity but work all over the world, supported by a financial endowment.

Our work on inclusive innovation policy asks who benefits from government investment in innovation and looks at how policy can be designed so that the risks and rewards of innovation are more equally shared. While there has been considerable policy interest in the ways that digital technologies are changing the nature of work, the role of innovation policy in creating a fairer future of work has been little explored. We’re keen to change this.

About this key role

Drawing on Nesta’s growing portfolio of relevant projects, your focus will be to help position Nesta as an influential source of new ideas on inclusive innovation policy. You will achieve this by devising an impactful policy agenda on inclusive innovation and the future of work, plus collaborating with relevant colleagues to craft clear, creative and insightful policy proposals and make the case for them with rigorous analysis. You will also:

  • Proactively work with national and local policymakers in the UK and international stakeholders;
  • Be an influential spokesperson in print, broadcast and social media;
  • Write policy briefings, working papers and responses to government consultations;
  • Help the team to develop new project ideas to further our work in this field.

What we are looking for

You will have a good grasp of UK policy relevant to the future of work and expertise in economic geography, innovation policy and/or labour market issues, plus the ability to engage with technical detail of policy and legislation and to propose creative and more provocative ideas that can stimulate debate.

An outstanding communicator, both verbal and written, you will be able to compose briefings, blogs and media pieces for expert and general audiences, with the ability to review and synthesise (often technical) information and produce reports. Strong interpersonal, analytical and time-management capabilities are also vital.
