We are looking for a creative, confident, and experienced individual, ideally with a charitable organisation background, to join us to support and promote the work of Families Outside through policy and public affairs. Cutting across a wide range of subjects, this post leads the identification, development, and implementation of legislation and policies to support families affected by imprisonment.

Families Outside is the only national organisation in Scotland working exclusively on behalf of families affected by imprisonment. The organisation exists because of the negative impact imprisonment has on the children and families left behind, often leading to longer-term hardship and exclusion. Our purpose is to improve outcomes for children and families affected by imprisonment so they can live lives free from stigma and disadvantage.

Working within the External Engagement team, the Senior Policy & Public Affairs Officer will support the organisation’s activities through identifying and analysing relevant policy, representing Families Outside with key stakeholders, undertaking research to inform policy, and monitoring media and policy activity. They will respond to policy consultations and engage proactively with the media.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in public affairs, media, communications, or related subjects, preferably with an interest in criminal justice. This person will be an excellent communicator with both internal and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority. They must have the ability to advise on and communicate the organisation’s policy positions, with experience of researching and drafting briefings, policy papers, and consultation responses.

If you are this person, then we want to hear from you.

This post will be based primarily at Families Outside office in Edinburgh, with some flexibility for home working.

28 hours per week worked flexibly.
