This course aims to detail the workings of government in the UK crucial to understanding its function and how you can effectively influence it.

The UK government is constantly bombarded by groups, organisations and individuals seeking to sway the creation of policy. In this modern age it is very easy for your voice to be lost amongst the countless others. To maximise the impact of your agenda it is vital that you possess an intricate knowledge of the decision-making process and their key points of influence.

Delegates will obtain a thorough explanation of the key governmental positions and services, covering Ministers and their Special Advisers, the Monarchy, and the Civil Service. Through a series of sessions and hands-on exercises, attendees will obtain a firm grasp of the formal and informal powerbases and the complex tensions between them. By understanding how the governing of the UK operates you will be shown the most efficient and impactful methods to interact with the creation and development of governmental policy.

Speaker: Darryl Howe - Training Consultant

Darryl has extensive experience working in senior roles within government and Parliament, including as Principal Private Secretary and Chief of Staff, and as Deputy Head of the Government Whips Office. For over twenty years he worked at the heart of government working closely with ministers and with Parliament on a daily basis often in highly charged political environments where tensions between party political needs, political expediency and responsibilities of government are finely balanced. He has experience of managing often tense and difficult relationships between government and other agencies including during a police investigation (Cash for Peerages) and inquiries by select committees including the Quadripartite Committee on Arms Export Controls, Foreign Affairs Select Committee, Public Administration Select Committee and the Trade and Industry Select Committee. He worked on the passage of legislation in the House of Commons and House of Lords and briefed ministers in both Houses in preparation for parliamentary questions and debates. Darryl now provides consultancy and training on the processes of government and Parliament. His clients include private and public sector organisations in the UK and overseas and a number of parliamentarians.
