The New National Curriculum presents many opportunities for the development of computing skills but also holds expectations that technology should be used to support teaching across the whole curriculum. Many schools are exploring the opportunities provided by mobile technology devices such as tablet computers. Ofsted recognise that “Most pupils are regular users of modern digital technology” and recommend that “Teachers need to use these contexts in their lessons” ( Moving English Forward, 2012)

In October 2013, At the National Literacy Trust conference “How to be outstanding in the new National Curriculum” Patricia Metham, HMI National Lead for English emphasised the need for enterprising use of modern technology across the curriculum along with a whole school approach to writing, access to real and meaningful audiences and the importance of speaking and listening skills. This course presents a clear and distinct methodology which ensures all classroom practitioners are able to make outstanding use of technology in their teaching to impact on standards, progress, pupil communication and independence.

The content of this course provides schools with an approach which will allow teachers to produce outstanding teaching across the primary curriculum and includes:

  • tasks integrated with the real world
  • access to real and varied audiences
  • enterprising use of modern technology
  • a whole school approach to writing
  • high emphasis on speaking and listening
  • effective use of drama

It is a practical "hands-on" course which provides clear examples of how mobile technology can support the complete writing process. Teachers and school leaders will leave with a clear methodology and adaptable practical examples enabling an effective and engaging whole school approach to cross-curricular writing. The methods shared are applicable in both KS1 and KS2 and build on outstanding practice which is embedded in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Featuring many opportunities for drama and role play, planning, drafting, editing, and publishing this full day will allow teachers to ensure that classroom technology is used to raise standards of writing in all curriculum areas.*iPad minis and a number of key apps will be used throughout the day demonstrating how new technology can transform outcomes for all pupils in speaking and listening, reading and writing. *methods can be applied to and outcomes achieved by using android tablets

A list of iPad apps which will be used on the day will be forwarded to delegates wishing to use their own iPad.

By the end of the day delegates will have:

  • A clear understanding of key elements leading to outstanding teaching of cross-curricular writing.
  • Learned how to implement a whole-school approach to teaching writing supported by mobile technology
  • Gained practical skills and experienced activities which can be shared with colleagues to inform an effective whole school approach to using mobile technology across the primary curriculum.
