This workshop will help senior public and private sector executives, officials, civil servants and others who are called on to deliver speeches, presentations and business pitches to audiences of all sizes and formats.
The workshop will enable participants to:
- Practise public speaking techniques in a collaborative but private environment, with constructive and closely observed feedback.
- Understand how to deliver messages using ‘Structure, Story and Signposts’
- Learn how to command an audience
- Understand and practise body language, tone, pitch, emphasis, rhythm and humour
- Develop techniques for using PowerPoint effectively – when to use it and when not to

Charles Crawford - Communications Specialist
The course will be led by Charles Crawford CMG, a communications specialist and public speaking expert. He has contributed to a wide range of speeches by members of the British Royal Family, successive UK Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers, a European Foreign Minister and the head of a leading Western intelligence agency. In 1987 as the FCO’s official speechwriter he wrote the UK Foreign Office’s first Guide to Speechwriting; it remains the basis for the FCO’s speechwriting training. Since leaving the UK Diplomatic Service in 2007 he has worked as a professional public speaking consultant delivering specialist communication and corporate diplomacy skills support services and training to a wide range of senior public and private sector clients. Having served in three Ambassadorial postings Charles Crawford has delivered presentations and speeches to a wide range of international audiences. He has also organised or observed public speaking events at the highest level, so he brings to the workshop a unique combination of speechwriting insight and operational acumen.
