This very practical training course utilises the attributes and resources of the World Wide Web to create a successful and accurate research.

Nowadays electronic media is overwhelming us with a lot of information and we need a higher level of browsing to make sure the result is reliable.

By attending this course the delegates will:

  • Understand the different types of search tools and search engines
  • Learn strategies on how to find good Internet resources and not waste time browsing through the irrelevant ones
  • Organise your research and find unbiased information
  • Understand the creative commons license types
  • Explore the ethical research consents and anonymity
  • Learn how to use social networks in their research

This course will be facilitated by Professor Steve Wheeler, Senior Lecturer in Information and Computers, University of Plymouth

Steve worked for 5 years in the Educational Technology department at the College of St Mark and St John, a teacher training college in Plymouth, before joining the National Health Service in 1981. From 1981 to 1995 Steve set up and managed the audio visual and information technology services within both the Plymouth and Cornwall Schools of Nursing (now incorporated into the University of Plymouth's Institute of Health Studies). In 1996 Steve joined the European funded RATIO project (Rural Area Training and Information Opportunities) as Training Manager. His project team set up a network of 39 centres across the South West peninsula of England which were used by local businesses to access telematic training courses and information products. In 1998 Steve joined the Faculty of Education at the University of Plymouth, where he is now based in the School of Partnerships, Enterprise and Professional Studies. He teaches on a range of under graduate and post graduate courses including the B.Ed Primary, BA Education Studies and the Integrated Masters Programme (IMP). Steve is regularly invited to speak at conferences and events worldwide, usually on one of his research subjects which include e-learning, mobile learning, distance education, cybercultures, Web 2.0 based learning (blogs, wikis, podcasting and social networks) and the psychology of learning.
