More people than ever now class themselves as freelancers in the UK economy. On current trends, the self-employed will soon outnumber the public sector workforce. This project will explore the implications of this shift for working life in Britain.
The seminar will be the first in a series of four that will seek to understand the challenges faced by freelancers in the modern economy.
The first roundtable will focus on how freelancing is defined and the implications of this for everything from tax policy to labour market regulation. A short briefing paper will be circulated prior to the event to form the basis of the discussion.
Professor Andrew Burke, Director of the Bettany Centre for Entrepreneurial Performance and Economics is confirmed to speak at the event and Duncan O’Leary, Research Director at Demos will chair the discussion.
