As we head towards the European Parliament elections in 2014, how will social media affect the outcome? Is there a European digital space or is social media divided on national lines?

All political parties now spend an increasing amount of their resources on trying to affect the social media landscape, but are these effective - or is it more noise than value?

Over the last 5 years, the rise of large scale social media has buffeted public events as the creation of mass publishing tools allows everyone to share their opinion. But has this actually affected outcome of these events, especially elections, and have elections actually been swung by social media?
