Politics is often judged through elections, leadership contests and TV debates. But much of the work that influences policy and defines the political agenda happens day-to-day on the green and the red benches of the Palace of Westminster.
Over the past year, many leading politicians have faced a challenging and fast-moving environment. They have been required not only to develop policy and navigate complex global issues, but also to communicate effectively with colleagues, the media and the wider electorate. The strongest performers combine political influence with strong public engagement, helping to shape conversations both inside Westminster and beyond.
That is why the Pagefield Award for Frontbench MP or Peer of the Year recognises a politician who has delivered standout political and media performances over the past twelve months while demonstrating significant influence among their fellow Parliamentarians.
This year’s shortlist reflects different approaches to political leadership, from party rebuilding and opposition politics to policy innovation and long-term intellectual contribution.
This year’s nominees are:
Kemi Badenoch MP
Despite the Conservative Party’s significant defeat at the 2024 UK General Election, Kemi Badenoch has remained one of the most prominent figures in British politics as she works to rebuild her party and redefine its political identity.
Throughout the year she has maintained a high public profile, regularly seeking to lead political debate through media appearances, speeches and interventions on some of the most contested issues in British politics.
Her willingness to take clear positions and drive discussion has ensured she remains a central figure in Westminster during a challenging period for her party.
Lord Willetts
Lord Willetts has continued to be one of Westminster’s most influential intellectual voices, bringing experience, policy expertise and long-term thinking to debates within government, Parliament and the wider public sphere.
His contributions on economic policy, intergenerational fairness, innovation and public services have continued to influence political discussion well beyond traditional party lines.
Combining deep policy knowledge with an ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, he has remained an important contributor to national policymaking.
Ed Miliband MP
As Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband has played a central role in one of the defining policy areas facing the UK Government.
Throughout the year he has been at the forefront of debates around economic growth, climate change and Britain’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
His ability to combine policy leadership with strong public advocacy has made him one of the Government’s most visible and influential frontbench figures.
The winner will be announced as part of the Pagefield Awards 2026 on 15th June.
