The challenge of building a better UK is a team effort – let’s make it happen together

As policy professionals, we work with ministers and senior government leaders to design and implement policies that make an impact on millions of lives and every government department.

But improving the UK takes all of us. We need people from every part of society to join our profession – a true diversity of backgrounds and experience from every walk of life. The best policy professionals are problem-solvers, collaborators, communicators, and people with an eye for detail. If this sounds like you, take on the challenge and start an exciting and rewarding career in policy.

Role details

Senior Policy Professionals are subject matter experts who provide specialised advice to the most senior leaders in a specific area of policy. You’ll combine a strong policy knowledge base with research, analysis and communication skills to write ministerial submissions and briefings, but also design and implement policy.

You’ll also lead and coach policy teams and manage key stakeholders in the course of your projects, building positive relationships which will help resolve complex policy issues and ensure effective communication.

Your experience and skills

To be successful in this role you’ll need strong interpersonal skills, along with the ability to consider a problem from all sides and perspectives, challenging assumptions and ensuring you get key insights from a range of stakeholders.

Good senior policy professionals are also able to analyse evidence, data and research to form sound decisions and build a thorough understanding of a particular issue.

You should also be able to collaborate well with others and use exceptional written communication skills to create persuasive, well-argued and nuanced documents that can communicate a viewpoint effectively.

Benefits and applying with us

Once you’re part of the Civil Service, you’ll have many ways build an exciting career, not to mention our training and development programmes. No matter which department you join, you’ll also have access to generous annual leave, a Civil Service pension, options for flexible working and an excellent range of family-friendly benefits.

When we bring different people, skills and experience together, there’s no limit to what we can achieve. You might not have considered policy before, but if you have the right skillset, there are great things ahead of you.
