Help shape the future of the country?

At Defra, our vision is to create a great place for living for people in this country. Our long-term aims are ambitious and you would join us at a unique opportunity to shape our future. We want to ensure a cleaner, healthier environment which benefits people and the economy; a world-leading food and farming industry; a thriving rural economy; and a nation protected against natural threats and hazards.

As a Higher Executive Officer (HEO) at Defra, you’ll be at the very heart of policy making and contribute toward matters that affect everyone in the country. It’s a highly active role focused on food, farming and plant health issues, where you’ll play an integral part in supporting and developing teams to deliver key outcomes and change. You’ll be expected to get to grips with a range of different policies, using evidence and expertise to help guide decisions about their development.

In a fast-paced environment like this, no two days are ever the same – so you’ll need to be versatile, collaborative and organised to ensure that you meet every deadline. As well as your Policy experience and excellent written skills, you’ll need to be a confident communicator with the ability to build relationships with Ministers, senior officials, stakeholders and a range of colleagues. A natural problem-solver, you’ll need to demonstrate your ability to think through a problem and identify potential solutions. You’ll also require good leadership skills that enable you to manage and motivate teams with a flexible approach.

In return, you’ll benefit from our commitment to nurturing your talent. You’ll also enjoy generous holidays, a civil service pension, childcare vouchers, bicycle loan schemes, work/life balance and more.

Salary: From £28,040 depending on location
Contract: Two-year fixed term appointment (potential extension or permanency)
