The course will illustrate lobbying’s many levels from local, to national and international. It will expose the most effective ways to get your voice heard from the crowd. It will illuminate the relevant decision makers and the best ways to approach and meet with them.

Lobbying has truly become essential to countless organisations and businesses in today’s world. Having a deep, extensive and precise understanding of it will lead you to have a more confident and charismatic purpose and style when promoting your organisations interest.

This one day course is aimed at those who wish to have a better understanding of the design and implementation of a public affairs programme. It is aimed for mid-level and senior practitioners. Minister, Select Committees, All Party-Parliamentary Groups, Special Advisors and the Media will all be accessed, evaluated and exposed.

Michael Burrell - Independent Public Affairs Consultant

Michael Burrell is an independent public affairs consultant and senior counsel, public affairs, Europe for APCO Worldwide. He has provided public affairs advice to clients in London, Brussels, Paris, Berlin and Rome.

He is Deputy Chair of the European Centre for Public Affairs (ECPA), a Brussels-based “best practice in public affairs” organisation, whose members are companies, trade associations and consultancies. He is also Chair of the Association of Professional Political Consultants (APPC), the self-regulatory body for the UK’s public affairs industry.

Previous roles included Vice Chairman, Edelman Europe, and Chairman of Westminster Strategy, which he founded. Clients he has advised include Microsoft, Pfizer and Samsung.

Michael was the first ever winner of the “Outstanding Contribution to European Public Affairs” award at the European Public Affairs News awards. Public Affairs News has described him as “a European public affairs legend” and PR Week as one of the 100 most influential industry figures in its 21 year history.

Tim Williams - Parliamentary Training Consultant & Former Senior Civil Servant

Tim Williams took early retirement from the Civil Service in March 2005 after working for nearly 37 years on a variety of trade and industry policies. He was appointed Parliamentary Clerk to the Department of Trade and Industry in 1989 and for 16 years was responsible for coordinating most of the Department’s Parliamentary activities working with Ministers in both Conservative and Labour Administrations.

He is a very experienced independent training consultant specialising in offering training on Whitehall’s interaction with Parliament and all aspects of Parliamentary procedures in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, in particular the details of the legislative process.

He speaks at open seminars and is also involved in designing more detailed training courses for government departments, public bodies and other organisations in the UK and overseas.

Lionel Zetter - Senior Counsel, APCO Worldwide and Author of the Political Campaigning Handbook

Lionel Zetter was born in Glasgow. He was educated at Berkhamsted School and the University of Sussex – where he got a BA Hons in History and an MA in Strategic Studies. During his career Lionel has worked for the Media Information Group and Political Research & Communications International. He was MD of Parliamentary Monitoring Services Ltd and Political Wizard Ltd, before selling the company to Dods Parliamentary Communication Ltd. He was Deputy Chairman of Dods until the end of 2007, and is now a Director of the Enterprise Forum, Managing Director of Zetter’s Political Services Ltd, and Vice President of Public Affairs Asia.

Politically, Lionel has chaired two Conservative Associations, and worked at Conservative Central Office. He has also been a general election agent, and stood for the Conservatives in Edmonton in 2005. Lionel is now a Senior Counsel at APCO Worldwide and Fellow of the CIPR and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is also a member of the NUJ. He was President of the CIPR in 2007, and is also a former Chairman of the Government Affairs Group. He has written and spoken widely on public affairs, politics and public relations, and made frequent media appearances. He is author of the ‘Political Campaigning Handbook’, ‘Lobbying – the Art of Political Persuasion’ and ‘Blueprint – the Policies and Personalities of the Conservative Government’. He is also Managing Editor of Zetter’s Political Companion. Lionel was voted 2008 Personality of the Year by readers of Public Affairs News and is in the PR Week Power Book. In 2012 Lionel was given the Public Affairs News 'Outstanding Contribution' award.
